Upcycling is being taken to a whole new level at the Men’s Shed in Denny.

The group of retired men have been breathing new life into unwanted bikes left at the Council’s two recycling centres, Kinneil Kerse and Roughmute.

So far twelve bikes have been transformed by the group and donated to local schools and to Denny residents.

Councillor Paul Garner, portfolio holder for Environment said: ”The Men’s Shed in Denny are doing a terrific job turning these unwanted items into road worthy bikes for the benefit of local schools and residents in Denny.

“Reusing or upcycling other people’s waste has many advantages for the environment and by reducing the amount of waste that ultimately ends up in landfill sites.”

Other items left at the Recycling centres also get given a new lease of life. Old computers and laptops are given to Retec, an electronics company where all data is erased and repairs are carried out. The not for profit company donates money to the Council which is then passed on to local charities and groups.

A few weeks ago the Men’s Shed were the lucky recipients, receiving a cheque for £365 to help them buy much needed parts and enable them to upcycle even more bikes in the future.
